In France, there once lived a man named Louis Pasteur, who was a doctor

of science. The thing that concerned him most was the disease rabies (狂

犬病).

“I must find the rabies germs (细菌) that hide inside people and make

them so sick that they die,”he thought.“Once I find them,I'll think

of a way to kill them.”

Many people thought Pasteur was wasting his time. Some laughed at him

and said,“You'll never do it.”

Pasteur didn't care what people thought;he believed in himself. He

kept right on working.

At the same time,in Germany,a boy named Joey was about to get into

trouble. He was teasing (逗弄) a dog.But this dog was sick with rabies,

were passed from the dog to Joey.

Soon the little boy was very sick. His parents could only wait. But then

there was news.Joey's mother saw it and shouted for joy.“A doctor of

science has found a way to save sick people like Joey!” she said. The

man,of course, was Louis Pasteur.Joey's parents quickly prepared Joey

for the long journey to Pads.

“Dr.Pasteur,”said the mother.“Our little boy is very sick. Can you

help us?”

“Perhaps,”said Pasteur.“I've invented a vaccine (疫苗).It is strong

enough to kill the rabies germs.Joey will be the first person to have my

rabies vaccine.”

“The first person?”asked Joey's worried father nervously.“Will

it be dangerous? Are you sure it will work?”

“I believe it will,”said Pasteur.

Slowly the vaccine killed more and more of the rabies germs.Joey began

to get well.Dr.Pasteur's vaccine was a success!

D Dodder (菟丝子) is an unusual and unwanted plant that attacks other plants.Except for its flowers, the plant looks like noodles. It's almost leafless, hanging down from the top of other plants that dodder needs to stay alive.Dodder does not produce its own food.Instead,it steals it

from other plants. It feeds on juices from the plant it is wrapped (缠

绕) around, often making its host very weak or even killing it.

Dodder can find other plants by their smell. When a young dodder plant

starts growing,it follows the smell of plants it prefers, like tomato

plants,potato plants,or other farm crops.

Unlike most plants that usually grow in the direction of light or

warmth,a dodder plant will grow in the direction of,for example, the

smell of tomatoes—if a tomato happens to be growing nearby.

However,a young dodder plant must find a host plant quickly. If it

cannot notice the smell of a possible host within a few days,it will dry

up and disappear—even if there is plenty of water around.

Once it finds a host, the young dodder plant will attach itself to

it and start growing faster. At that point, the dodder plant will drop its

root.It no longer needs its root once it is attached to the host and wrapped

around it.

Dodder is thus a difficult weed (杂草) to manage and a real headache

for farmers. When it does get out of hand, dodder can greatly reduce a

farmer's crop production or even destroy crops completely. Therefore,

farmers in warm parts of the world often check to make sure no unwanted

dodder seeds have mixed with their crop seeds. This is a good way to stop

dodder plants from finding their way into a crop field.

【语篇解读】 本文是说明文。文章介绍了一种寄生植物——菟丝子。

【参考范文】 An embarrassing experience
Last Sunday, when I walked my dog around my local streets,I met a new couple. They liked my dog and gave it a small sandwich.I thanked them and had a chat with them. They said they had just moved here and unfortunately had a troublesome neighbour, who was rather noisy at night, which made it hard for them to fall asleep.“Oh,it's a great pity.I think I'm quite lucky to have kind neighbours,”I said.
Saying our goodbyes,we separated. As I and my dog were nearly home, I was embarrassed to see that my new-found friends were walking towards the house next to mine.
